I think we’re in a period where coaching is becoming more and more accepted for the average person. By the way- I hate that term ‘average person’. There is no average person. We’re all different. But for argument’s sake, let’s use it to account for the general populous. You can see it in your social feeds all day long- people wanting to help people as a side hustle. MLM (multi-level marketing) businesses are based on this to a large extent, although only a few really tout it as a benefit of ‘joining their tribe’. Beachbody is one that has done a good job of turning everyday people into fitness and nutrition coaches. They’re cheerleaders. And really, that’s what a coach is to a large degree- someone to cheer you on and hold you accountable. It’s good stuff.
Let’s look at Beachbody in particular. They tout the coaching aspect very heavy in their social marketing, but in the end, they’re trying to sell you a product. But you know what? Their product has given a lot of people a great success story and has gone a long way to help people get healthy. But the reasoning behind it isn’t so much the product as the coaching mentality that their company preaches. You see- the coaching and accountability is where the magic happens. Having someone to cheer you on gets the results. Having someone to show you the way, if you will. And having someone vested enough to shake you a little when you’re not doing what you should be doing. Many times people are ‘too close to the fire’ (thanks, Mark Palmer) to see what changes really need to be made in their own lives or businesses to do it themselves.
There are three things that all people need to grow and be better, and they’re all related to the types of people that you hold in your circle. Everyone needs a mentor, or someone better than themselves that they can aspire to be. Everyone needs a protege or someone that they can teach. And everyone needs someone equal that they can challenge, and that can challenge them. It’s really quite simple. If you’re the smartest or ‘best’ person in the room, then you’re in the wrong room. You’re stagnant in that area. If you’re the weakest link then, while there’s nowhere to go but up, you’re probably not being included by your peers enough to grow. And if you only surround yourself with people who are just like you, then where is your inspiration?
Think about the circle you run with. Think about the dynamic that it has and the value that people bring to you. Think about the value that you add to them. There’s a saying that I heard awhile back- you are the sum of your 5 closest friends. It’s so true. Now with that said- add up your 5 closest friends. Do you like the total?
