Competition whose motive is merely to compete, to drive some other fellow out, never carries very far. The competitor to be feared is one who never bothers about you at all, but goes on making his own business better all the time.Henry Ford
Competition is a funny thing. It can motivate. It can inspire. It can unlock potential. But as a society, we’ve taken this to the extreme. And I don’t mean extreme sports- I dig those! I mean that we’ve taken the one-up mindset of sports competition and now we base our businesses, lives, and legacies on it.
I’m going to let you in on a little business secret- if you are in a business which competes, get out of it at once. Be in competition with nobody.
There is a reason that a basketball game, or any game for that matter, has a beginning and an end. It has to do with the competitive aspect of the match. It is stressful. It is hard. It is, in all reality, completely unsustainable.
When people take the competitive mindset into their personal or business lives, it immediately sends your body into fight or flight mode. Stress ensues. It makes your ‘opponent’ go on the defense, which thickens the tension a bit more and fuels the ‘competition’.
It can feel good to be in competition with someone else. It can feel like things are happening. And they are happening.
But are they the results you want?
A competitive mindset takes the focus off of your vision and puts it squarely on the competition and what they are doing. You no longer operate to do your best, you operate to do just a bit more than the other guy. You may win, but had you kept your focus on your own vision, you would have been lightyears ahead of where you now find yourself.
Be in competition with nobody. Except yourself.
