Every year I go to the corner of 3rd St. & Central Ave. on the Saturday before the Kentucky Derby for a different kind of athletic display…the Kentucky Derby Marathon & miniMarathon! My Dad & sister-in-law have been running for the last several years, so those of us who are not into that many consecutive miles of movement meet at Jim Patterson Stadium to cheer them on as they enter the last big stretch of the race. We come with cowbells, pompoms & posters, proud of our family & also of the thousands of strangers pursuing a goal.
There are tons of teams running both for fun & to raise awareness for different causes around the country on this special day. I cry at least five times a year, blown away by the stories running by. I’m talking fireman in full gear & parents pushing their disabled children in special wheelchairs for 13.1 miles just to give them the experience. It pulls on the heartstrings in a Hallmark movie kind of way.
This year there will be one more group to watch, with some of our favorite faces in town.

LouCity staff runners include Club President Brad Estes, Coach John Hackworth, Community Relations Director Mario Sanchez, various players & other park and soccer enthusiasts, all determined to help provide access to quality play spaces for the youth of South Louisville.
This fundraising partnership, begun in 2018, has thus far secured enough support to install a 5-a-side field at Beechmont Community Center & a larger field in William Harrison Park. Wyandotte Park is the next place scheduled to receive THREE 5-a-side soccer fields that should be open to the public in Fall 2019!
So, how does the running raise funds, you ask?
Louisvillians are encouraged to VOTE for their favorite LouCity runner via online donations to the South Louisville soccer fields! The runner who raises the most funds will be the “Winner for Wyandotte”! They are all winners in our book & we hope you’ll CLICK HERE to support these incredible new fields for our community!
If you’re out on the race route in the morning, keep a look out for these special shirts & cheer them on. They don’t just bring excitement to the city through professional soccer success, they are invest in our kids & that is their real LouCity legacy in our town.
