This podcast is extra special. We had the privilege to sit down with Deryl & Meredith Sweeney, a couple who, along with 4 other families, have started a non-profit to help find a cure for a disease that affects tens of thousands of people in this country. I’m talking about cystic fibrosis, a progressive genetic disease that causes persistent lung infections and limits the ability to breathe over time. It has historically severely shortened the lifespan of those affected with the disease.
The Sweeny’s have a son, Samuel, who was diagnosed with the disease shortly after birth. This was their gateway into the non-profit world and their road is inspiring beyond measure. Instead of letting this disease take over their lives in a negative way, they’ve been proactive to find ways to contribute to the medical community to help find a cure. And the response has been amazing.
We talk about the path that they have gone on to create this foundation and the ways that they’ve taken action. Instead of saying “that’s not in our wheelhouse” they’ve said, “we’ll figure it out.” It’s such a cool story. We hope you enjoy this inspiring story and we encourage everyone to check out their upcoming event, CRAFT Louisville, on October 7th. This unique event brings craft brewers and local pizzerias together for a fun time under the 2nd street bridge.
