Every morning the birds outside my window greet the day with cheerful songs. They tend to start around 5:00, which I do not appreciate, but by 8:00 it makes me smile. When I hop in my car, the first thing I do is turn on music, and you better believe I’m singing along as I drive. I look forward to the phone ringing at some point every day and one of my parents being on the other line. Even if they really have nothing to say, their voices are two of my favorite things to hear.
Sounds are a huge part of my life. I can’t imagine waking up without the birds, driving in silence, or never knowing what my Momma’s laugh is like. I’m sure most of us have treasured sounds we feel we could not live without.
According to the National Institutes of Health (NIH) 2-3 of every 1,000 infants in the United States are born with profound hearing loss, with many more losing their hearing later in childhood. These children require extraordinary intervention to discover and engage with the world of sound.
Enter Heuser Hearing Institute
What began as the Louisville Deaf Oral School in 1948, has evolved into a multi-faceted non-profit treatment institute including Heuser Hearing & Language Academy, Heuser Hearing Clinic and Heuser Early Intervention Program with five locations throughout the city. All programs feature staff who work passionately every day to educate and empower children and adults with hearing, speech and balance disorders.
The Language Academy features classrooms equipped with technology to promote hearing and language development in children learning to maximize the function of cochlear implants, a Hearing Peer Program in tandem with JCPS, art therapy, music therapy, and interactive play spaces including a new outdoor musical space, the PNC Sound Garden, and much much more!
Every student who attends the Heuser Language Academy does so TUITION FREE. This is made possible by the generous support of private donors, grants and the profits from the clinic that are used to cover school funding gaps each year. The clinic offers FREE Hearing Screenings both at the main locations as well as across the city during health fairs and mobile screening events!
On this week’s episode of the #502LeaderSeries Podcast, we sat down with CEO Brett Bachmann and Education Director Debbie Woods to learn more about the life changing programs at the Heuser Hearing & Language Academy/Early Intervention Program, the Hearing Clinic, and how Heuser promotes the value of partnership through volunteer programs and collaborations across the city.
