Shelby Park will soon be bustling with new activity when Logan Street Market opens its doors on August 10. Not only will the market feature over 20 vendors, but they’ll also house a brewery, in addition to hosting farmer’s markets (beginning July 14) and community events. The market hopes to be a community gathering space for people to learn, grow, and connect with their neighbors, as well as local farmers, chefs, artists, and merchants.
Logan Street Market will be Louisville’s first public market, and it will provide fresh, local, healthy food options for all, from an area that is currently underserved in the grocery department. In addition to food and sales, the market will offer education in the form of the Market Kitchen, where patrons will have an opportunity to access free public nutrition classes. The classes will be based on seasonal, healthy, and affordable meals.
Another first, opening along with the market, is Louisville’s first specialty cheese shop — Harvey’s Cheese. They’ll be offering up a carefully curated selection of fine foods including not only cheeses, but also country ham and other accoutrement. I can’t wait to visit Harvey’s to purchase a dinner party’s worth of cheese! (Whether there will actually be a party, or I will just eat all of that cheese myself, remains to be seen.)
Cold Smoke Bagels will also open its doors along with the market, and fill a void as Louisville’s only Jewish deli. They’ll offer a menu of creative and classic Jewish options, including bagels, schmears, sandwiches, latkes, smoked fish, fermented vegetables, grab-and-go lunch options, and more. I had my first Cold Smoke Bagels experience this past weekend, and I can assure you it won’t be my last!
The opening of Logan Street Market marks exciting development, not only in Shelby Park, but for the city of Louisville. The market will create new jobs, entrepreneurial opportunities, and tourist traffic, in addition to creating a space where profits will filter back into our local community. Plus it will increase resident participation and pride in Shelby Park!
I’ll be visiting often. I hope to meet you there!
